Irregular Bleeding

Some women have unusually long or heavy menstrual cycles. Normal periods typically last less than 7 days. Also, menstrual cycles come in more than 3-week intervals. Bleeding at intervals shorter than three weeks is typically abnormal.

Also if bleeding involves clots or you always bleed through tampons or pads your bleeding may be too heavy. Also bleeding that results in anemia is usually abnormal.

What causes heavy or frequent bleeding?

Heavy bleeding always needs to be evaluated by a physician. There are many causes for heavy bleeding.

What type of an evaluation is needed?

The exact evaluation depends on your particular history and age. You will at least receive a pelvic exam and a Pap smear. Depending on your age you may be tested for various infections and receive an ultrasound. If you are over 35 you may need an endometrial biopsy.

What type of treatment is available?

Obviously, the type of treatment depends on the diagnosis. In our office, we always use the least invasive approach. Once the initial evaluation is completed, and cancer and infection are ruled out, we attempt to control the bleeding with medication or small procedures.

We are extremely excited about a new minimally invasive treatment for heavy bleeding called Novasure. This is an office-based procedure that markedly decreases the amount of blood lost with your period. Novasure may even be an alternative for major surgery such as myomectomy or hysterectomy.
